Charlottetown, PE — February’s Islandora webinar featured an informative presentation by Sandy Rodriguez, the Digital Special Collections Coordinator at the LaBudde Special Collections of the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) Libraries. Sandy focused on the design, migration and launch of the UMKC Digital Special Collections.
The project began in 2014 when the shared technology office at UMKC contracted with discoverygarden to complete an install of the Islandora software stack and multi-site configuration. A working group formed among the University campuses. It focused on what skill building and training would be needed to launch the repository. UMKC then initiated another contract with discoverygarden for theming and metadata configuration; it helped them obtain a firm grasp of Islandora.
“Working with discoverygarden was immensely helpful in getting us over the hurdle of understanding” said Sandy. “The time for learning was greatly expedited by working on this project with them.”
On January 19, 2016, UMKC officially launched the Digital Special Collections site. Although it continues to grow, the site now features 16 collections that are home to over 10,000 digital photographs, posters, graphics and sheet music. “discoverygarden is incredibly knowledgable and made it really easy for us to implement” said Sandy. “We were really happy with the end product.”
