Sprouts

Based on Islandora’s Solution Packs, Sprouts are application toolkits designed around common data needs. Developed with the input of information professionals and end-users, Sprouts represent proven best-practices for set data-types.

 

Sprouts are unique, customizable and manage your information tools and resources in a seamless environment.  Each sprout is specially designed for a certain type of data, and is therefore easily customized for a variety of industries and organizations.  Additionally, you can manage externally held resources or export data to the applications you regularly use.  Sprouts we currently have, or are in the process of finalizing include:

 

Libraries, Museums and Cultural Organizations

Institutional Repository: Allows organizations to meet the requirements of funding agencies to make copies of funded research outputs/publications accessible in an open access repository.  This sprout provides a number of unique features (automatic document conversion, Sherpa/RoMEO integration, COINS support, LDAP integration) not available in other systems.

Digital Books: For providing access to digitized book collections, this sprout includes advanced workflow features (including enriched TEI-tagged OCR and named entity extraction for subjects, people, places, etc.) and includes features that allow community participation in quality assurance of the content.

Digital Magazines: Based on the Digital Books, this provides additional features unique to magazines (e.g. story bundles, PDFs for story or entire issues, enriched TEI tagging, community commenting).

Digital Newspapers: Based on the Digital Books SP, this provides additional features unique to newspapers (e.g. page views with search word highlighting, enriched TEI tagging for local attributes, cross-story linking). 

Images: Provides advanced features for images of various types (including high resolution viewer, image zooming, tagging and annotations). 

Maps: Provides advanced features for maps (e.g. GIS/historical map overlays, Google Map integration and high resolution display and tagging of maps).

Video: Advanced features for storing and annotating video files, including the ability to attach time-stamped personal, group and private annotations. 

Audio: Based on the Video Sprout , this provides support for a range of audio file formats as well as support for annotating, transcribing and searching audio files.

 

Administrative Systems

Financial Document Management: 1st specialized sprout for document management, including the ability to store and describe document sets, associated record classification and disposition schedules (for the automated archiving and destruction of digital records), etc. 

 

Research Organizations -- BioScience

Specimen Collections: For biological collections, including the ability to add rich metadata (e.g. Darwin Core-based species information, location data) to individual species, specimens and lab samples and store associated digital assets and data.

Genetics/Proteomics:  A range of modules for storing, transforming and searching sequence data (e.g. sequence ingest, BLAST, ClustalW). 

Epidemiology: A sprout  with support for specialized numeric data (including DDI metadata support), including the ability to run standard and specialized statistical routines on stored data sets, export results to a variety of data formats, etc.

 

Research Organizations -- Social Science

Numeric Data:  Based on the Epidemiology sprout, it provides additional features for the description of numeric data in the social sciences and storage/distribution of original survey data. 

 

Research Organizations -- Humanities

Document/Manuscript Collection: Based on the Digital Books sprout, it provides additional features unique to humanities collections, including enrichedTEI tags, side-by-side editing of original manuscript images and textual data.

 

Personal or Small Groups

General Digital Asset Management (DAM): A general-purpose SP that provides storage and description of a wide range of file formats – suitable for personal or small group repository systems.

 

General

A generalized document storage system with document conversion, full text search and additional features suited to a corporate document repository.
