Leveraging Drupal for Digital Asset Management - DrupalCon 2014

discoverygarden, the main contributor and service provider for the Islandora Open Source digital asset management framework will be at DrupalCon 2014 in Austin, Texas from June 3-6.  Solution Architect, Mitch MacKenzie, will be there to answer questions and lead discussions on how to use Islandora to address the growing demand to integrate digital asset management (DAM) into Drupal sites.

The Islandora solution is made up of well supported best-of-breed Open Source technologies, including Drupal, Fedora Commons, Apache SOLR, Tesseract OCR and many others. For organizations already familiar with Drupal, Islandora is a natural extension to create digital repositories.

Mitch will host a drop-in session on Friday June 6 between 1-3 pm at the Radisson Hotel’s Chavez Restaurant Lounge at 111 Cesar Chavez St., Austin, TX.

Mitch says “DrupalCon is becoming more important to the Islandora community. More of our clients are interested in leveraging additional Drupal functionality. We’re receiving requests from Drupal shops looking to integrate Islandora for their clients.”

There was tremendous interest in Islandora at DrupalCon 2013 in Portland, Oregon. Developer Jordan Dukart attended last year and describes the event as a “turning point” for himself as an Islandora developer.

“DrupalCon helped promote a personal paradigm shift to start leveraging components that an average Drupal user expects into the Islandora product” Jordan says. “The upcoming release of Drupal 8 is also helping to promote a cultural change at discoverygarden. Before, development focused on modifications to Fedora Commons as opposed to attempting to leverage solutions that already exist in the Drupal community.”

Jordan says talking with members of the Islandora community and the academic community has prompted discussions about solving ongoing dilemmas when tackling digitization and preservation.
